Scottish Ensemble - Court & CountryMusic
13 March 19:30 - 22:30
J.S. Bach Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 with second movement by Sally Beamish
Sally Beamish Seavaigers
J.S. Bach Violin Concerto in E major
Plus a collaboration of new music from Chris Stout (fiddle), Catriona McKay (Scottish harp) and Scottish Ensemble.
Written centuries apart, each piece on this programme is united by an irresistible and inescapably human rhythmic drive, whether in Bach’s heavenly streams of endless notes, the unrelenting gusto of Bartók’s army of strings, or the rugged flicks and twists of Sally Beamish’s treacherous ocean in her concerto for fiddle and Scottish harp.
Scottish Ensemble will indeed be joined by two of the foremost soloists in the Celtic tradition, Chris Stout and Catriona McKay. As well as performing together inSeavaigers, Beamish’s haunting, unforgettable piece which follows a sea journey across the Scottish coast, the acclaimed duo have been working with Scottish Ensemble musicians on a new collaboration, which they will perform for the first time on this tour.
Whether dancing in Bach’s court, toiling in Bartók’s fields, or sailing across Beamish’s seas, let the UK’s leading string orchestra take you on a toe-tapping adventure through rhythm, melody and time.
This event includes an Scottish Enemsble Blether – a 30 minute pre-concert talk in the OneTouch Theatre at 6.45pm. Go to www.scottishensemble.co.uk for further details.
thrilling…lyricism and fire…delicate restraint and furious gusto…music that wore its ambition and complexity brilliantly lightly, creating a seamless mesh between folk and contemporary classical stylings. THE SCOTSMAN ON SEAVAIGERS
